Like many in my generation, I grapple with intense climate anxiety. The news is a constant reminder that we’re falling short of the targets needed to stay within the 1.5-degree limit set by the Paris Climate Agreement. With the frequency and severity of climate disasters on the rise, it’s easy to feel a sense of hopelessness. Although many countries and cities have laid out climate action plans, they often come across as abstract figures without concrete steps to achieve them.
But there’s hope—effective solutions to stay within our temperature limits already exist. Around the world, countries are implementing both proven and innovative strategies to combat the climate crisis. Through this blog, I aim to explore what’s being done globally and how Canada measures up. I’ll be delving into the actions that cities and nations are taking to address this urgent issue.
My focus will largely be on urban living. Currently, 55% of the world’s population resides in urban areas, and this is expected to rise to 68% by 2050. Cities, with their comparatively lower carbon footprints, play a pivotal role in the fight against climate change. Through these posts, I hope to better understand and share the ways urban centers are leading—or can lead—the charge in climate action.
