When I moved from a house to a condo, one thing I really missed was composting. Unfortunately, living in an older building that isn’t part of the City of Toronto’s waste collection program means no composting for us. I was told it’s because our compactor can’t handle compost, which felt like a missed opportunity.
With Toronto’s landfill expected to hit capacity by 2034/2035, it seems like now would be the perfect time to make composting easier for everyone, especially those of us in condos!
So, I was thrilled to hear that Compost Winnipeg is stepping up with a cool solution—community food waste drop-offs across the city! While Winnipeg doesn’t have a curbside compost program yet (though they’ve done a pilot), these drop-offs are a great way to get people used to composting and ease the transition until they can roll out city-wide pickup.
In Paris, they’ve come up with a smart approach too. Many apartment buildings share a courtyard with some green space, and the city provides the materials (and a master of composting) to have residents set up a compost bin right there. Plus, they have community bins around the neighborhood where people can drop off their organic waste.
I’d love to see something like this in Toronto. It would make composting way more accessible for condo dwellers like me and help take the pressure off our landfill. It’s a small change that could make a big difference!
